According to Hydeia’s website, she was abandoned at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. She was adopted as a baby, and wasn’t diagnosed with congenital HIV until age three.

When she was 11, she appeared on Oprah. On the show she explained that by age 5, she was exhibiting symptoms of full-blown AIDS. Doctors told her that she wouldn’t live past age 5, but now she is getting ready to celebrate her 31st birthday on June 14. She survived fungus in her brain, pneumonia, and blood infections.

Hydeia is now a distinguished motivational speaker and international HIV/AIDS activist.
